Description

This comforting Stick of Butter Rice recipe features long grain rice cooked with French onion soup, beef broth, and rich butter, baked to perfection in the oven. The butter melts into the rice, infusing it with deep, savory flavors and a creamy texture, making it a perfect side dish for any hearty meal.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 cup long grain rice (white; not instant)
  • 1 can French onion soup (10.5 oz / 298 g)
  • 1 1/4 cups beef broth or beef consomme
  • 1/2 cup butter, cut into 8 cubes

Instructions

  1. Prepare. Preheat the oven to 400ºF (204ºC) and lightly grease a medium-sized baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Combine. Add the long grain rice to the baking dish, then pour in the entire can of French onion soup and the beef broth or consomme. Stir well to evenly distribute the ingredients.
  3. Add the butter. Cut the half cup of butter into 8 equal cubes and place them evenly on top of the rice and broth mixture to ensure even melting and flavor infusion.
  4. Cover. Tightly wrap the top of the baking dish with aluminum foil to trap steam and cook the rice evenly.
  5. Bake. Place the covered dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, carefully remove the foil, stir the rice to redistribute heat and moisture, and bake uncovered for an additional 30 minutes until the liquid is absorbed and rice is tender.
  6. Rest. Remove the dish from the oven and let it rest, covered or uncovered, for 5 to 10 minutes to allow steam to finish cooking the rice and to let flavors settle.
  7. Serve. Fluff the rice gently with a fork to separate the grains, then optionally garnish with freshly chopped parsley before serving warm as a delicious side dish.

Notes

  • For best results, use fresh French onion soup and good quality beef broth or consomme for deeper flavor.
  • You can substitute beef broth with vegetable broth to make a lighter version.
  • For a richer dish, add a sprinkle of shredded cheese on top before the final baking step.
  • This dish pairs wonderfully with grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or a fresh green salad.
  • If you prefer garlic flavor, a small amount of minced garlic can be stirred in with the broth and soup before baking.
  • Letting the rice rest after baking helps improve texture and flavor absorption.
