Description

Indulge in the perfect balance of sweet, salty, and crunchy with these Salted Caramel Chocolate Pretzel Bars. Featuring layers of melted semi-sweet chocolate, crunchy mini pretzel twists, rich caramel, and a sprinkling of coarse sea salt, these bars are a delightful treat for any occasion. Easy to prepare and no baking required, they set in the refrigerator making them a great make-ahead dessert or snack.

Ingredients

Chocolate Layer

  • 12 ounces good quality semi-sweet chocolate chips, divided

Pretzel Layer

  • 8 ounces mini pretzel twists

Caramel Layer

  • 11 ounces caramel candies
  • 2 tablespoons water

Topping

  • Coarse sea salt for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Prepare the base chocolate layer: Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Melt 8 ounces of the semi-sweet chocolate chips either on the stove over low heat or in the microwave at low power, stirring frequently until smooth and melted. Spread the melted chocolate into a rectangular shape evenly over the prepared cookie sheet.
  2. Add pretzels: Immediately press the mini pretzel twists into the warm chocolate layer. It's fine if they overlap slightly; just ensure they are well distributed across the chocolate.
  3. Melt the caramel: Unwrap the caramel candies and place them in a microwave-safe bowl or a small saucepan. Add about 2 tablespoons of water. Melt the caramels slowly either in the microwave or on the stove, stirring frequently until they become smooth and fully melted. Pour the melted caramel evenly over the layer of pretzels on the chocolate base.
  4. Drizzle remaining chocolate and add salt: Melt the remaining 4 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate chips using the same method as before. Drizzle this melted chocolate over the caramel layer. While the chocolate is still warm, sprinkle coarse sea salt generously on top to enhance the flavors.
  5. Set and serve: Place the entire cookie sheet in the refrigerator. Chill until both the caramel and chocolate layers are set and firm, which usually takes about 1 hour. Once set, break or cut the bars into pieces and serve.

Notes

  • Use good quality semi-sweet chocolate chips for the best flavor and smooth texture.
  • Be sure to stir frequently when melting chocolate and caramel to avoid burning and ensure even melting.
  • If you prefer less salty, adjust the amount of sea salt sprinkled on top.
  • Store leftover bars in an airtight container in the refrigerator to keep them firm and fresh.
  • You can substitute pretzels with salty crackers if desired.
