Ingredients You'll Need

The first part of the image shows a frying pan with nine small, round raw meatballs spread evenly in a circle with one in the middle. The meatballs are red and textured, sitting on a dark gray non-stick pan. The second part of the image shows the same pan now with cooked brown meatballs spread around the pan. In the middle of the pan, there are light brown chopped onions, light yellow minced garlic, and sliced white mushrooms with brown sides being poured in from a white bowl held by a woman's hand. Every ingredient in this recipe plays a starring role in creating a delicious balance of flavors and textures. From the smoky paprika to the fresh mushrooms, each component adds depth and character to this simple, yet irresistible dish.

  • Sunflower oil: A neutral oil perfect for frying the meatballs and vegetables without overpowering the flavors.
  • Meatballs: The hearty protein base that makes this bake filling and satisfying—choose your favorite pre-made or homemade variety.
  • Onion: Adds sweet, aromatic depth when softened.
  • Garlic: Boosts flavor with its classic punchy aroma.
  • Mushrooms: Bring an earthy, meaty texture that complements the meatballs beautifully.
  • Tinned chopped tomatoes: Form the rich, tangy backbone of the sauce.
  • Chilli flakes: Offer a subtle heat and complexity without taking over.
  • Sweet smoked paprika: Adds smoky warmth and vibrant color.
  • Vegetable stock: Enriches the sauce and aids in cooking the pasta directly in the pan.
  • Tomato puree: Intensifies the tomato flavor and thickens the sauce.
  • Pasta: Absorbs the sauce’s flavors beautifully—using a sturdy shape ensures it holds up well during baking.
  • Mozzarella: Melts into a bubbly, golden topping that finishes the dish wonderfully.
  • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper: Essential seasonings to elevate all the flavors perfectly.

How to Make Meatball Pasta Bake {30 Minute Meal} Recipe

Step 1: Brown the Meatballs

Start by heating sunflower oil in a large, grill-proof deep frying pan over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook for about 5 minutes until they begin to turn golden all over. This step enhances flavor through caramelization, creating a savory foundation for your bake.

Step 2: Sauté the Vegetables

Next, toss in the chopped onion, garlic, and sliced mushrooms. Fry everything together for another 5 minutes until the onions soften and the meatballs are browned evenly. This creates a tasty aromatic base that melds beautifully with the tomato sauce later on.

Step 3: Add the Sauce and Pasta

Pour in the tinned tomatoes, then sprinkle in chilli flakes and sweet smoked paprika for a rich, smoky kick. Stir in the vegetable stock and tomato puree, followed by the dry pasta, and season generously with salt and pepper. Give everything a good mix, then cover the pan with a lid and turn the heat to low. Let it cook for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring regularly, until the pasta absorbs the liquid and reaches perfect tenderness.

Step 4: Grill with Mozzarella

While the pasta is finishing, preheat your grill to medium. Once the pasta is cooked and the sauce has thickened nicely, sprinkle the mozzarella evenly on top. Place the pan under the grill for about 5 minutes, until the cheese melts, bubbles, and turns beautifully golden. This bubbling cheese layer is the crowning glory that brings the whole dish together.

How to Serve Meatball Pasta Bake {30 Minute Meal} Recipe

A gray pan filled with three main layers: the bottom layer has whole mushrooms and browned meatballs, the middle layer shows uncooked rigatoni pasta and bright red chunky tomato sauce being poured in by a woman's hand holding a glass container, and the top layer is shredded white cheese evenly spread over the pasta and sauce, ready to melt. Garnishes

Freshly chopped parsley or basil leaves sprinkled over the top add a pop of color and a burst of fresh herbal flavor that balances the richness. A light drizzle of good olive oil or a sprinkle of chili flakes can also elevate the dish if you love a bit more zing.

Side Dishes

This dish shines on its own, but pairing it with a crisp green salad tossed in a lemony vinaigrette or some steamed green vegetables adds a refreshing contrast. A slice of crusty garlic bread is also a fantastic companion to mop up every last bit of that delicious sauce.

Creative Ways to Present

For a fun twist, serve individual portions in small oven-safe ramekins for a personal, cozy feel. Or layer the pasta and meatballs in a deep baking dish, then guess what? Let guests scoop their own helping straight from the pan for a casual, family-style experience that’s warm and welcoming.

Make Ahead and Storage

Storing Leftovers

Keep any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. The flavors will deepen, making the dish even tastier the next day. Just be sure to cool completely before storing to maintain freshness.

Freezing

This Meatball Pasta Bake {30 Minute Meal} Recipe freezes beautifully. Portion it into freezer-safe containers and freeze for up to two months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating to ensure the best texture and flavor retention.

Reheating

Reheat gently in the oven at 160°C (320°F) until warmed through, or microwave in short bursts, stirring in between to heat evenly. If the pasta seems dry, add a splash of water or stock to revive the sauce while reheating.

FAQs

Can I use frozen meatballs for this recipe?

Absolutely! Frozen meatballs work perfectly. Just add a couple of extra minutes to brown them properly in step one to ensure they cook through.

What type of pasta works best in this bake?

Short, sturdy pasta shapes like penne, rigatoni, or fusilli hold the sauce well and bake nicely, preventing mushiness. Avoid delicate shapes that might lose their texture during cooking.

How can I make this recipe vegetarian?

Swap the meatballs for plant-based alternatives or hearty vegetable balls made from lentils or mushrooms while following the same method for delicious results.

Is it possible to prepare this recipe gluten-free?

Definitely. Use gluten-free pasta and verify that your meatballs and tomato puree do not contain gluten. The rest of the ingredients are naturally gluten-free.

Can I make this recipe spicier?

For sure! Increase the amount of chilli flakes or add a dash of hot sauce to the tomato sauce for an extra kick that will wake up your taste buds.

Description

A hearty and comforting Meatball Pasta Bake that comes together in just 30 minutes. This one-pan meal features tender meatballs, sautéed vegetables, and pasta simmered in a rich tomato and smoked paprika sauce, topped with melted mozzarella cheese for a deliciously satisfying dinner.

Ingredients

Meatball Pasta Bake Ingredients

  • 2 tsp Sunflower oil
  • 340 g Meatballs
  • 1 Onion, peeled and chopped
  • 3 Cloves of garlic, peeled and chopped
  • 300 g Mushrooms, sliced
  • 400 g Tinned chopped tomatoes
  • ½ tsp Chilli flakes
  • 2 tsp Sweet smoked paprika
  • 750 ml Vegetable stock
  • 4 tbsp Tomato puree
  • 250 g Pasta
  • 150 g Mozzarella cheese
  • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil: In a large grill-proof deep frying pan or sauté pan, heat 2 teaspoons of sunflower oil over medium heat to prepare for cooking the meatballs and vegetables.
  2. Cook the meatballs: Add 340 g of meatballs to the pan and pan-fry for about 5 minutes, turning occasionally until they start to brown and color all over.
  3. Sauté vegetables: Add the chopped onion, garlic, and sliced mushrooms to the pan with the meatballs. Continue frying for another 5 minutes until the vegetables begin to soften and the meatballs are browned on all sides.
  4. Add sauce ingredients and pasta: Stir in 400 g of tinned chopped tomatoes, ½ teaspoon of chili flakes, 2 teaspoons of sweet smoked paprika, 750 ml vegetable stock, 4 tablespoons of tomato puree, 250 g of dry pasta, and season generously with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Mix all ingredients well.
  5. Simmer with lid on: Cover the pan with a lid, reduce the heat to low, and let everything cook for 15 to 20 minutes. Stir regularly to prevent sticking, until the pasta is cooked through and most of the liquid has been absorbed.
  6. Preheat grill: While the pasta simmers, preheat your grill to medium heat to prepare for melting the cheese topping.
  7. Add cheese and grill: Once the pasta is cooked, sprinkle 150 g of shredded or sliced mozzarella evenly over the top. Place the pan under the grill for about 5 minutes or until the cheese has melted and is bubbly and golden.
  8. Serve: Remove the pan from the grill carefully and serve the Meatball Pasta Bake hot for a delicious and comforting meal.

Notes

  • Using a grill-proof pan is essential for the final step of melting the cheese under the grill.
  • Stir the pasta occasionally during simmering to avoid it sticking to the bottom of the pan.
  • You can substitute mozzarella with another melting cheese of your choice like cheddar or provolone.
  • For a spicier dish, increase the amount of chili flakes according to taste.
  • This recipe can be adapted with meat-free meatballs for a vegetarian version, but do adjust cooking times accordingly.
