Description

This Italian Grinder Sandwich is a TikTok viral favorite that combines toasted hoagie rolls with melted cheese, savory Italian cold cuts, and a tangy, flavorful grinder salad. The sandwich is warmed in the oven to melt the cheese and heat the meats, then topped with a zesty mixture of lettuce, pepperoncini peppers, red onion, and a seasoned mayonnaise dressing. It’s a perfect, hearty sandwich that's quick to prepare and bursting with fresh and bold flavors.

Ingredients

Bread & Cheese

  • 2 large hoagie rolls
  • 8 slices of cheese (provolone, havarti, pepper jack, white cheddar, and mozzarella cheese work well)

Meats

  • 1 to 1 1/2 lbs. sliced deli cold cuts (turkey, salami, etc.)

Vegetables & Toppings

  • 1 large tomato, sliced
  • 1/2 head iceberg lettuce, sliced/shredded thinly (about 4 cups)
  • 1/2 cup sliced pepperoncini peppers or banana peppers
  • 1/2 small red onion, sliced (about 1/2 cup)

Cheese Garnish

  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese + more to taste

Dressing & Seasonings

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder or 1 clove fresh garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes, optional
  • Fresh ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prep: Preheat your oven or toaster oven to 400°F. Season the tomato slices lightly with salt and pepper to enhance their flavor.
  2. Start the Sandwich: Slice the hoagie rolls lengthwise and place them on a sheet pan. Add two slices of your mixed cheeses to each half, then pile the deli cold cuts evenly on top of the cheese layers.
  3. Warm: Place the assembled sandwich halves in the preheated oven for 5-6 minutes, or until the bread is toasted, the cheese has melted, and the meats are warmed through.
  4. Make the Grinder Salad: While the sandwiches bake, prepare the salad by combining mayonnaise, red wine vinegar, pepperoncini peppers, garlic powder, and oregano in a medium bowl. Add the sliced red onion and shredded lettuce, tossing to coat the lettuce thoroughly with the dressing. Season the salad with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
  5. Assemble: Remove the sandwiches from the oven. Sprinkle half of the grated Parmesan cheese over the warmed meats. Layer the seasoned tomato slices on top, then generously top one side with the prepared grinder salad. Finish by sprinkling the remaining Parmesan cheese over the salad for extra flavor. Close the sandwiches, slice in half, and serve immediately while warm.

Notes

  • For the hoagie rolls, choose sturdy rolls that can hold the fillings without becoming soggy.
  • You can use any mixture of deli cold cuts such as turkey, salami, ham, or roast beef based on your preference.
  • If fresh garlic is preferred over garlic powder, use 1 clove finely minced to intensify the dressing’s flavor.
  • To add a spicy kick, include red pepper flakes in the grinder salad dressing.
  • This sandwich is best enjoyed fresh and warm for optimal texture and flavor.
