Ingredients
Chicken
- 500g / 1 lb chicken breast, boneless and skinless (2 pieces)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1/4 cup flour
Sauce and Cooking
- 3 1/2 tbsp (50g) unsalted butter (or 2 1/2 tbsp olive oil)
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 1/2 tbsp apple cider vinegar (or white or other clear vinegar)
- 1 tbsp light or all-purpose soy sauce
- 1/3 cup honey (or maple syrup)
Instructions
- Prepare the Chicken: Cut each chicken breast horizontally in half to create 4 thinner steaks. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper.
- Coat with Flour: Place the flour in a shallow dish and dredge each chicken piece in the flour, shaking off any excess for an even coating.
- Heat the Butter: Melt most of the butter (reserve about 1 tsp) in a large skillet over high heat to get it hot and ready for searing.
- Sear the Chicken: Place the coated chicken pieces in the skillet. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes on the first side until golden brown, then flip and cook the other side for about 1 minute.
- Adjust Heat: Lower the heat slightly to medium-high to prepare for simmering the sauce without burning the garlic or chicken.
- Add Garlic and Butter: Clear a space in the pan, add the minced garlic and the reserved small dab of butter. Stir the garlic briefly once the butter melts to release its aroma.
- Add Sauce Ingredients: Pour in the apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, and honey. Stir or gently shake the pan to mix everything well. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it simmer for about 1 minute to thicken slightly.
- Coat the Chicken: Turn the chicken pieces to coat them evenly in the sauce. If the sauce becomes too thick, add a small splash of water and stir to loosen it up.
- Serve: Remove the pan from heat immediately to prevent overcooking. Plate the chicken and drizzle the remaining honey garlic sauce over the top. Serve hot.
Notes
- You can substitute maple syrup for honey for a slightly different sweetness and flavor profile.
- Use light or all-purpose soy sauce to avoid overpowering saltiness.
- To make this recipe dairy-free, use olive oil instead of butter as indicated.
- Cooking times may vary slightly depending on the thickness of the chicken breasts.
- For thicker sauce, simmer a bit longer but avoid burning the sauce.
