Ingredients
Herb Butter
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 tbsp fresh dill, diced
- 3 garlic cloves, crushed
Steak Sandwich
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1 lb steak
- 1 tbsp salt (adjust to taste)
- 1 large yellow onion, sliced into half rings
- 4 slices Havarti cheese
- 1 baguette
Instructions
- Prepare Herb Butter: In a bowl, combine the softened unsalted butter with crushed garlic cloves and diced fresh dill. Mix thoroughly until the ingredients are evenly incorporated and the butter has a consistent texture. Set aside for later use.
- Slice Steak: To ensure thin, even slices, place the steak in the freezer for a few minutes to firm it up. Then, slice the steak into thin strips against the grain to maintain tenderness.
- Cook Steak: Heat a skillet over high heat and add 1 tablespoon of oil. Once hot, add the sliced steak and season generously with salt. Cook until the steak strips are just golden and cooked through, then remove from the skillet and set aside to rest.
- Sauté Onions: Using the same skillet, add the sliced onion half rings and sauté over medium heat until they become golden brown and caramelized. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- Assemble Sandwich: Slice the baguette lengthwise and spread the prepared herb butter evenly over both cut sides. Layer the cooked steak strips on the bread, followed by the sautéed onions, and top with slices of Havarti cheese.
- Broil Sandwich: Keep the sandwich open-faced and place it under a broiler for about 2 minutes or until the Havarti cheese melts and becomes bubbly. Watch closely to prevent burning.
- Serve: Remove the sandwich from the broiler and serve immediately while warm for the best flavor and texture experience.
Notes
- Freezing the steak briefly before slicing helps achieve thin, uniform strips.
- Use a high smoke-point oil like canola or vegetable oil for cooking the steak.
- Adjust salt to taste depending on the saltiness of the cheese.
- Broil the sandwich on a rack close to the heating element for even melting of the cheese.
- Serve with a side of pickles or salad for a complete meal.
