Description

This Easy & Quick Crab Rangoon recipe features crispy, golden fried wontons filled with a creamy mixture of imitation crab meat, cream cheese, and flavorful seasonings. Perfectly paired with a sweet Thai chili or plum dipping sauce, these bite-sized appetizers are quick to prepare and ideal for parties or snacks.

Ingredients

Filling

  • 3/4 cup imitation crab meat, chopped into 1-inch pieces (or sub with drained canned crab meat)
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons green onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon regular soy sauce (or light soy sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon white granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Assembly

  • 20 wonton wrappers
  • Water, for sealing wontons

Frying

  • 2 cups vegetable oil (or any neutral tasting oil) for deep frying

Serving

  • Sweet Thai chili sauce or plum sauce, for dipping

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling: In a large bowl, combine the imitation crab meat, softened cream cheese, green onion, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, sugar, and black pepper. Use a fork to mix everything thoroughly until well combined.
  2. Assemble the wontons: Set up a small bowl of cold water nearby. Lay one wonton wrapper flat on a clean surface and place about 2 teaspoons of the filling in the center. Lightly dab water along the edges of the wrapper to help seal it.
  3. Seal the wontons: Pinch two opposite corners of the wrapper together to start forming the shape. Then bring the remaining corners up to meet the pinched corners, pressing firmly to seal all edges. Make sure the tips are sealed tightly to prevent filling from leaking during frying. Repeat until all filling is used.
  4. Heat the oil: In a large pan, heat the vegetable oil to approximately 325°F (163°C), using an instant-read thermometer to monitor the temperature for ideal frying conditions.
  5. Deep fry the wontons: Fry 6-7 wontons at a time in the hot oil. Cook for about 1.5 to 2 minutes until they become golden brown and crispy, flipping halfway through to ensure even frying.
  6. Drain and cool: Remove the fried wontons with a slotted spoon or tongs, shaking off excess oil. Place them on a wire rack or a plate lined with paper towels to drain and cool slightly before serving.
  7. Serve: Arrange the crab rangoon on a serving platter and accompany them with sweet Thai chili sauce or plum sauce for dipping. Enjoy warm for the best taste and texture.

Notes

  • Do not overfill the wonton wrappers to prevent them from bursting during frying.
  • Maintain the oil temperature at around 325°F for perfectly crispy and non-greasy wontons.
  • Use an instant-read thermometer for accurate oil temperature monitoring.
  • Wontons can be assembled ahead of time and refrigerated until ready to fry.
  • Substitute vegetable oil with any neutral oil like canola or peanut oil for frying if preferred.
  • Leftover crab rangoon can be reheated in a hot oven or air fryer to maintain crispiness.
