Description

A hearty and flavorful Blue Ribbon Chili recipe featuring ground beef, kidney beans, and a blend of spices, simmered to perfection for a rich, comforting dish perfect for gatherings or a cozy meal.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 3 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 cup salsa
  • 4 ounces canned chopped green chiles
  • 5 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 (15 ounce) can light red kidney beans
  • 1 (15 ounce) can dark red kidney beans

Instructions

  1. Sauté Meat and Onions: In a large pot over medium to medium-high heat, combine the ground beef and chopped onion. Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef is browned and the onions are tender. Drain excess grease if desired to reduce fat content.
  2. Prepare Tomato Mixture: While the meat cooks, in a medium mixing bowl, combine tomato sauce, salsa, canned chopped green chiles, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and chili powder. Stir thoroughly to blend the flavors.
  3. Combine Ingredients and Simmer: Add the tomato mixture along with the light and dark kidney beans to the pot with browned meat. Stir to integrate all ingredients. Reduce heat to low and cover the pot with a lid left slightly open to allow steam to escape. Let the chili simmer gently for 1 hour, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking or burning on the bottom.
  4. Thicken Chili: Remove the lid and allow the chili to simmer uncovered for an additional 15 minutes. This step thickens the chili and concentrates the flavors for a richer taste.
  5. Serve: Ladle the chili into bowls and add your favorite toppings such as shredded cheese, sour cream, chopped onions, or jalapeños if desired. Enjoy your hearty Blue Ribbon Chili!

Notes

  • Draining excess grease after browning the beef can help reduce the fat content in the chili.
  • Simmering uncovered at the end helps to thicken the chili by evaporating excess liquid.
  • Feel free to customize the toppings to your preference for added flavor and texture.
  • Using both light and dark kidney beans adds texture and color contrast to the dish.
  • Chili powder amount can be adjusted based on your spice preference.
