Ingredients
Mushroom Gravy Ingredients
- ¼ cup butter
- 1 (16 ounce) package sliced mushrooms
- Salt to taste
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour, or as needed
- 1 quart beef stock
- 1 pinch ground black pepper, to taste
- 1 pinch fresh thyme leaves, to taste
Instructions
- Gather Ingredients: Assemble all the necessary ingredients to ensure a smooth cooking process.
- Sauté Mushrooms: Heat the butter in a saucepan over medium heat until it begins to foam. Add the sliced mushrooms and season with salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms release their liquid and it evaporates, about 20 minutes.
- Add Flour: Sprinkle in the flour and stir continuously for 5 minutes to cook out the raw flour taste and to form a roux that will thicken the gravy.
- Incorporate Stock: Slowly add 1 cup of beef stock while stirring briskly to incorporate the roux smoothly without lumps. Then pour in the remaining beef stock and mix until fully combined.
- Season and Simmer: Add ground black pepper and fresh thyme leaves to the mixture. Reduce heat to medium-low and let the gravy simmer, stirring frequently, until it thickens, about 30 minutes.
- Serve: Once the gravy reaches desired thickness and flavor, remove from heat and serve warm over your favorite dishes.
Notes
- For a vegetarian version, substitute beef stock with vegetable stock.
- If the gravy becomes too thick, thin it with additional stock or water.
- Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper according to taste.
- Fresh thyme adds more flavor than dried, but both work.
- This gravy pairs excellently with meatloaf, roasted meats, and mashed potatoes.
