Ingredients
Butter and Sugars
- ¾ cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup brown sugar
Wet Ingredients
- 3 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup over-ripe mashed bananas (about 2 medium bananas)
Dry Ingredients
- ¾ cup all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
Chocolate
- ¾ cup semisweet chocolate chips
- 2 tablespoons semisweet chocolate chips (for sprinkling)
Instructions
- Prepare the Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9 x 9 x 2-inch square baking pan with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make for easy removal of the brownies.
- Mix Butter and Sugars: In a large bowl, use an electric hand mixer or a whisk to cream together ¾ cup unsalted butter, 1 cup granulated sugar, and ½ cup brown sugar until well combined and smooth.
- Add Eggs and Vanilla: Add 3 large eggs and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract to the butter-sugar mixture. Mix well until the mixture is smooth and homogenous.
- Fold in Dry Ingredients: Stir in ¾ cup all-purpose flour and ½ teaspoon salt until just combined. Avoid over-mixing to keep the texture tender.
- Prepare Banana Mixture: In a separate medium bowl, mash 1 cup of over-ripe bananas. Sprinkle ½ teaspoon baking powder over the mashed bananas and stir gently to combine.
- Combine Batter with Banana Mixture: Add half of the batter mixture into the bowl with the banana mixture. Stir gently to combine and set this banana batter aside.
- Add Cocoa and Chocolate to Remaining Batter: To the remaining half of the batter, add ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder and ¾ cup semisweet chocolate chips. Stir thoroughly to distribute the chocolate evenly.
- Assemble the Brownies: Dollop spoonfuls of about half of the chocolate batter into the prepared pan. It does not need to fully cover the bottom. Next, pour the banana bread batter over the dollops. Then, drop spoonfuls of the remaining chocolate batter on top. Use a knife to gently swirl the mixtures to create a marbled effect. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons semisweet chocolate chips evenly over the top for extra chocolatey goodness.
- Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes. Check doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center—it should come out clean with just a few moist crumbs. Do not overbake to maintain moistness.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the brownies to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before slicing into 16 squares. Cooling ensures clean slices and optimal texture.

- Do not overmix the batter to avoid dense brownies.
- Check doneness near the end of baking time to avoid drying out the brownies.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
