Description

Deliciously crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, these Apple Fritters are a perfect sweet treat made with fresh diced apples, a hint of cinnamon, and a light, fluffy batter. Fried to golden perfection and optionally dusted with powdered sugar, they make an irresistible snack or dessert that's quick and easy to prepare.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 large apples, peeled and diced
  • ½ lemon, juice
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 egg
  • ½ lemon, zest
  • 3 tablespoons (40 grams) sugar
  • 2 ½ tablespoons (40 ml) milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • ¾ cup + 1 tbsp (100 grams) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • vegetable oil, for frying
  • ½ - 1 tablespoon powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples: Peel and dice the apples, then place them in a small bowl. Stir in the lemon juice and ground cinnamon to coat the apples evenly. Set aside to let the flavors meld.
  2. Make the Batter: In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, sugar, milk, and lemon zest until smooth. Add the all-purpose flour and baking powder, stirring until the batter is smooth and free of lumps. Fold in the diced apples, ensuring they are evenly incorporated throughout the batter.
  3. Heat the Oil: Pour about 1 inch of vegetable oil into a frying pan and heat it over medium heat. Check if the oil is ready by using a thermometer—aim for 350°F (175°C). Alternatively, insert the end of a wooden spoon into the oil and look for bubbles forming around it, indicating the proper temperature for frying.
  4. Fry the Fritters: Using a spoon, drop small portions of batter (approximately 2 inches or 5 cm wide) into the hot oil, leaving about 1 inch between each fritter to prevent sticking. Fry for about 60 seconds on each side, or until the fritters turn golden brown and are cooked through. Remove them carefully with a slotted spoon and place on a plate lined with kitchen paper to drain excess oil.
  5. Optional Baking Method: To bake instead of frying, preheat the oven to 400°F (205°C) and grease a non-stick baking sheet with oil. Spoon the apple fritter batter onto the sheet, spacing them about 1 inch apart. Sprinkle with granulated sugar and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden and cooked through.
  6. Serve: Serve the apple fritters warm, freshly made, and dusted with powdered sugar if desired. Enjoy this delightful treat as a snack or dessert!

Notes

  • Use firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for the best texture and flavor.
  • Ensure the oil is at the correct temperature to avoid greasy fritters; too cool and they will absorb oil, too hot and they may burn.
  • The vanilla extract is optional but adds a nice aromatic note.
  • You can adjust the amount of sugar to suit your taste or dietary needs.
  • Apple fritters can be stored in an airtight container and reheated in the oven to regain crispness.
